The meat industry pollutes more then the multinational oil companies: this is the data that emerges from the latest just published report by the organization Environment America.
According to the study, recently published, livestock industry and meat production would in fact be responsible for 14.5% of global emissions of gases of greenhouse effects.
Not only : that intensive lifestocks have a very high environmental impact, also because of the polluting effects of using substances such as manure used in farming, fertilizers used in the production of feed for intensive livestock farming and waste processing plants, which are then released into the waters and soils.
Environment America has among other things revealed in fact that one of the worldwide largest companies of producers of meat dumped into waterways 104 million pounds of pollutants between 2010 and 2014, thus becoming responsible for water pollution more than ExxonMobil, one of the major oil companies in the world.
There is a further reason why the production of meat has devastating effects on the environment and turns out to be an unsustainable model: According to the FAO, in fact, whether to produce a kilogram of wheat takes 1,000 to 2,000 liters of water, to produce the the same quantity of grain-fed beef needs it from 13,000 to 15,000 liters.
The implicit message of this research is therefore clear: through a spread of a vegetarian food diet, or at least by implementing an effective reduction of animal protein consumption, these environmental problems could be significantly reduced.
