The chia seeds are the seeds of Salvia hispanica floral plant of the Labiatae family, native to Guatemala and Central and South Mexico.
At the time of the pre-Columbian peoples, along with amaranth, beans and corn, it was the staple food of the diet mainly for Mayans and Aztecs. The mythology has it that these populations derived strength to win battles by chia seeds, since they increased energy and stamina; the seeds were also used as offerings to the gods during the propitiatory rites.
The chia seeds have very interesting nutritional properties: above all it's astonishing their calcium content and the particularly balanced presence of essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6.
They are naturally gluten-free and an excellent source of vegetable protein and fiber, delicious to enrich and complete the daily meal, snacks, desserts. Excellent combined with cookies, focaccia breads, cereal or salads.
